James Daniel Cowling

That’s my official English name! You can call me James or JD. Check back later for my Chinese name. Mum and Granny are still thinking about it.

Visit from granny

I’ve got two visitors today. I saw granny for the first time. She came with Mum. She asked me to eat more and sleep more. I waved my foot to say that I understood. I have to say Mummy’s milk is yummy and they all say that it’ll make me strong. Thanks Mum!

I can see

My jaundice is getting better now, so the doctor says I don’t need any more sunbathing. So they’ve taken my mask off, and I can see everything around me. It’s not very interesting though, so I sleep most of the time.

My weight is up to 665g now. A different CPAP machine is giving me breathing support because the old one hurt my nose a bit.

Message from Auntie

My lovely auntie Josephine just sent me a message. She said that she’s very happy that I’m growing so well, and she dedicated a song to me — Little People from Les Miserables …

They laugh at me, these fellows, just because I am small.
They laugh at me because I’m not a hundred feet tall.
I tell ‘em there’s a lot to learn down here on the ground.
The world is big but lil’ people turn it around.

Hernia

Two inguinal hernias have been developing in my lower abdomen. I’ll need surgery to correct them when I’m a bit stronger and before I’m discharged from hospital, probably in June. It’s a bit worrying to go under the knife, but apparently this kind of complication is fairly common in premature babies like me.

Still, Mum and Dad are thankful that I’ve had no major complications so far. I’m already well good at breathing properly and regulating my temperature, while my digestion is improving every day.
